Chapter Five

Corey

Corey glanced over at his sleeping guest on the couch as he snatched up his ringing cell phone and answered it. “Hey, Zack,” he whispered as he left the living room.

“Corey, the weather appears to be turning for the worst.”

Corey glanced outside. He’d left the outside lights on so he could keep an eye on the snowfall in the dark. The snow from the unusually heavy west Texas snowstorm was starting to accumulate. That kind of thing never happened here. “Who would have guessed that we’d have a white Christmas this year?”

Zack grunted out a sound. Born in the early eighteen hundreds, Zack retained a formal style of speaking and overall restrained mannerisms that made people think he was standoffish, but Corey had found that was all just habit from the time he’d been raised. He really liked the guy. He was a fantastic boss and an even better friend.

Last year when Corey’s world fell to shit, it was Zack who made sure Corey didn’t fall to shambles with it. Zack had offered him a safe place to work and recover from his shock about the existence of paranormals and the resulting death of his best friend and part-time lover.

“I’m not sure you should get on the roads tonight with the questionable conditions,” Zack said.

“Yeah...” They’d only gotten a couple of inches, but in an area of the country that only received snow once every five to ten years, this made the roads treacherous. There would be no snow removal and anyone else on the road would most definitely be a hazard since the roads got dangerous here from simple rain. When you didn’t have bad weather, no one learned how to drive on it. “You may be right.”

Although his truck was already wrecked and he hated to miss Christmas Eve with his friends, he wouldn’t be sad to stay home with Dare.

As if he could read Corey’s thoughts, Zack asked, “Is your houseguest still with you?”

“Dare? Yeah, he’s been asleep most of the day, but I think he’s feeling better.”

Just at the thought of him not doing better, Corey had to check on him. Still asleep with that blond lock of hair falling artfully over his forehead highlighting his sooty thick lashes lying against the healthy, glowing skin of his cheeks. Thank fuck. Corey willed his heart rate to slow back down. Corey wandered back to the mudroom where he could look outside and the sound of his voice wouldn’t wake Dare.

He’d never felt this protective of another person in his life. Was it because Corey felt responsible for Dare’s injuries or because of their mating bond? The mark on the back of his neck burned every time Corey thought about Dare eventually going home.

“Do you know much about them? Were’s?” he asked Zack as he traced the steam on the windows.

“Not really. Eddie was the local alpha and he didn’t welcome interference or association of any sort. He kept his herd close.” Zack hesitated. “I heard rumors, but nothing that could be confirmed.
